Aboriginal language knowledge and youth suicide

چکیده
This brief report details a preliminary investigation into how community-level variability in knowledge of Aboriginal languages relate to “band”-level measures of youth suicide. In Canada, and, more specifically, in the province of British Columbia (BC), Aboriginal youth suicide rates vary substantially from one community to another. The results reported demonstrate that not only did this simple language-use indicator prove to have predictive power over and above that of six other cultural continuity factors identified in previous research, but also that youth suicide rates effectively dropped to zero in those few communities in which at least half the band members reported a conversational knowledge of their own “Native” language. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Transferring Whose Knowledge? Exchanging Whose Best Practices?: On Knowing About Indigenous Knowledge and Aboriginal Suicide
Over the better part of a decade we have been hard at work re-fashioning a still earlier decade’s worth of work on identity development and youth suicide in order to better fit these efforts to the special circumstances of Canadian Aboriginal youth—an ongoing effort aimed at explaining two deeply puzzling matters. One of these concerns the heartbreakingly high rate of suicide widely known to ma...
متن کاملThe Suicide Prevention Continuum.
The suicide prevention continuum illustrates a practical approach to the complex issue of suicide prevention. The continuum evolved from discussions with two Aboriginal communities in Atlantic Canada about suicide and the different types of interventions available. The continuum offers a framework and reference tool to differentiate between the different stages of suicide risk. It illustrates w...

Swanson and Colman provide a muchneeded analysis of associations between exposure to suicide and suicidality outcomes among Canadian youth. Youth suicide in Canada cannot be fully understood without consideration of First Nations, Inuit or Métis populations. Some researchers conclude that suicide among Aboriginal people must be considered a different disease from suicide among non-Aboriginal pe...
متن کاملSuicide and Aboriginal Youth: Cultural Considerations in Understanding Positive Youth Development
The importance of positive youth development cannot be overstated. We strive to foster healthy mental/emotional, social, spiritual and physical development in our children. Alarmingly high Aboriginal youth suicide rates in some areas call for an increased understanding of how protective factors and risk-taking behaviours influence youth development. This may help us develop strategies to increa...
متن کاملCultural Continuity as a Moderator of Suicide Risk among Canada’s First Nations
Eight years ago the journal Transcultural Psychiatry published the results of an epidemiological study (Chandler and Lalonde 1998) in which the highly variable rates of youth suicide among British Columbia’s First Nations were related to six markers of “cultural continuity” – community-level variables meant to document the extent to which each of the province’s almost 200 Aboriginal “bands” had...
